Fredericia
Fredericia is located in the eastern part of the Jutland penisula, in the sub-region known as The Triangle (Trekanten). The Municipality of Fredericia has just under 50,000 inhabitants, of whom 40,000 live in Fredericia. It has a natural location as the geographical capital of Denmark, with motorways, railways, airport and the sea close by. Virtually the entire country can be reached within a few hours’ travel by car and train. Fredericia has been a member of the Nordic City Network since 2010.
The city was founded as a fortress in the mid 17th century. Mighty ramparts were designed as defences against enemy armies. With its protective ramparts, the city also became a free city which granted asylum to all kinds of people, cultures and religious denominations. Today, the historical defensive ramparts is a protected nature reserve surrounding the city. It also functions as a recreational area, offering a great view out over the city and the sea.
Because of the great landscapes of the Little Belt close by and the city`s central position in relation to business growth, Fredricia attracts a diverse workforce. Fredericia has a technical college, upper secondary school and higher preparatory (HF) course, International Business College, Social- og Sundhedsskolen (Basic Health Care College) and Maskinmesterskolen (Engineering College). The musical stars of the future are trained at Det Danske Musicalakademi (The Danish Academy of Musical Theater), Denmark’s only academy for musical theatre.
Projects related to the knowledge city
Fredericia was orginally planned and established according to the Renaissance ideals for fortified cities with a strict urban plan and straight roads. The unique historical urban plan is largely preserved today, and will continue to form an active part in all future development of of Fredericia. However, taking history into consideration must not stand in the way of innovative thinking.
-FredericiaC – a new district for all
FredericiaC will be a completely new district that will open up the old fortified city to the water. It is an example of how new and old can come together, and the future in the development of the city. The ambition is to create a few thousand new jobs, around a thousand homes with direct access to the Little Belt and lively city life. The project has a user-grounded and long term perspective ( realised over the next 20 to 25 years), with the main criterias; where history meets modern urban development, quality of life, sustainability and enforce the Triangle Area.
- DanmarkC – Denmark’s biggest business development project
The Municipality of Fredericia’s unique geographical location makes the starting point for DanmarkC, 6 million square metres of business land along Fredericia’s motorway network. It offers room for service, storage, production and innovation companies, and will serve as the logistical centre of Denmark.
