Culture and urban space

The pilotproject Culture and urban space is a collaboration between The City of Malmö and the City of Aarhus. The project aims to develop and test new theories on how to strengthen the cultural city and in more concrete terms support the cultural significance of the urban space. This means focusing on the more fundamental importance of the urban space as a place for social exchange, debate, community, self-realisation and democracy.

First of the project involves developing an understanding of the potential and societal role of the urban space, as well as the means that may contribute to this effect. Analyses of 4 concrete urban spaces in Malmö (Folkets Park and Sundspromenaden, BO01) and Aarhus (Mølleparken and Musikhushaven/Rådhusparken) have been carried out and discussed with invited researchers. The next phase will test new cultural theories and strategies in selected spaces in the two participating cities.
